Worthing’s James Colburn finally got his season back on track with his first win of the season at Thruxton last weekend in rounds 5 and 6 of the Renault UK Clio Cup.
At a circuit where he has achieved double wins before, James took a season’s best third on the grid for both races, a charge in the second half of the session resulting in him finishing only 0.062s slower than pole-sitter Mike Bushell.
Unfortunately James couldn’t convert his 3rd place into a podium finish in the first action packed race. Despite getting a great start and heading into the complex in 2nd place, the Westbourne-Motors backed driver was powerless as the drivers behind made the best use of the tow and slipped back to 4th place. After a brief safety car period Colburn had slipped further back to 7th place, but was able to claw back a few positions finishing 5th.
In the second race however, Colburn managed to hold his position well after getting another superb start off the grid, heading into the complex leading the race. A three way battle ensued for the lead and fortunately for him, the two drivers behind took each other out. This left a one lap sprint between himself and Rivett for the win. He was alongside Colburn on the run into the final chicane, however both drivers outbraked themselves and were forced to cut the chicane, ensuring Colburn’s victory. “It was all done by the start really,” an elated Colburn said “I monstered off the line, saw a Clio width gap down the inside and got through. I then defended for my life really, and to maintain the lead, especially around here with the slipstream, I’m really pleased.
Westbourne’s second driver, Maidstone based Devon Modell also had a solid weekend qualifying 5th and 4th for his races, his best of the year so far. After slipping down the order early on in race one, he fought back well and enjoyed battling with Jordan Stilp to finish 6th just behind team-mate James. In the second race Devon had a similar race, but this time finishing 8th after tussling for position with Ant Whorton Eales.
