The British Automobile Racing Club, BARC choose their infamous own Thruxton circuit, the UK’s fastest race track, to recently launch there new initiative to progress young drivers on a career to BTCC.
BARC are now in their second year of running the popular Junior Saloon Car Championship JSCC (formerly Saxmax) aimed at 14 to 17 year olds as they start their car racing career.
The low budget series offers close and competitive racing using front wheel drive Citroen Saxo VTR and this can be the first steps on the ladder to BTCC.
BARC have created a natural progression that leads onto Michelin Clio using the generation 3 normally aspirated Clio Cup car, then onto the current UK Clio with a 1.6 litre turbo charged power unit before progression to BTCC.
Naturally the FWD format is common to categories meaning time spent at the bottom rung pays dividends as you rise up the ladder. Each step represents a significant increase in engine power and, of course, the budget needed to compete.
Westbourne were the first team to compete in all feeder championships in 2014 and continue to assist new drivers starting racing. Westbourne’s Ben Colburn lined up alongside Andrew Jordan’s latest MG Touring car ahead of the new season.
